Plans are now finalised and a builder has been appointed for the new pedestrian bridge crossing the Brisbane River.

Victorian company Fitzgerald Constructions will construct the The Neville Bonner Bridge as part of the $3.6 billion Queen’s Wharf casino development.

The Queen’s Wharf casino and hotel development is being constructed by the Destination Brisbane Consortium.

At yesterday’s announcement, Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said that “we’re partnering with the private sector to deliver projects that create thousands of jobs here in Queensland.”

“This bridge will connect South Bank with the new retail and dining precinct at Queen’s Wharf in Brisbane’s CBD.

“Not only will this project create thousands of new jobs, by having better connectivity, we’re ensuring strong flow-on benefits for businesses throughout the city” she said.

Narelle Anderson, the niece of Neville Bonner, said the bridge’s naming was a respectful decision towards her uncle.

“For our family and for any aboriginal person working hard, it’s a great honour and a great recognition for what he did,” Ms Anderson said.

“A bridge just made sense,” she said, reference Mr Bonner’s work to bridge the gap and frequent crossing of the floor in parliament.

Construction of the bridge which will link South Bank with the Queen’s Wharf development, will create 30 full-time jobs.

Work is expected to commence in March next year, subject to state government approval, according to the Brisbane Times.

Spokesman says builder is immensely proud

A Fitzgerald Constructions spokesman said the organisation was immensely proud to be building the Neville Bonner Bridge.

Queen’s Wharf is a $3.6 billion project which, when completed in 2022, will house a casino, over 50 restaurants, bars and cafes in addition to 1.5 hectares of public space. The development is projected to attract an extra 1.4 million people to Brisbane each year when complete.

Destination Brisbane Consortium project leader Simon Crook said that linking South Bank and Queen’s Wharf created a complementary offering.

“The bridge lands right in front of the wheel, which is in direct pedestrian contact with South Bank station,” Mr. Crook said. “South Bank have been very proactive in this discussion.”

“We’ve come up with them what we all think is the best solution for how pedestrian flow will move through that area”.

Mr Crook added that the public would receive the Neville Bonner Bridge “for free,” since it will be paid for by Destination Brisbane and then transferred to the State Government following completion.

The Queen’s Wharf Brisbane development is being delivered by a joint venture which is led by The Star Entertainment Group and Hong Kong-based partners Chow Tai Fook Enterprises and Far East Consortium.

Fifth and sixth apartment towers have been approved for the location which offer 1360 apartments, however the construction timing has not been confirmed. The internal fit-out for the hotels and casino will begin in 2021 and into 2022.
